Response to Course Material

December flew by this year! I cannot believe that I am writing this post already but here I go. I should start with the multiple Hamlet videos because those took the majority of our time. I was interested in the different ways the same scene could be reenacted but it was hard to stay awake for some. Although it was rough at some points in the movies they all had thought provoking parts. Especially with the relationships the characters have between themselves. Some portray Hamlet and Gertrude's closet scene as a scene of lovers. I personally was disturbed by this and did not get that vibe from the script. One portrays Ophelia and Laertes as lovers, which was very shocking. Some have a more than brotherly affection between Horatio and Hamlet, and some keep the original idea of relationships. Each director had the power to interpret the play as they wanted and they took this and ran with it. Nothing else was done during this busy month except our continual discussions on Hamlet which has not yet hit me with an ah-ha moment except when we talked about how Hamlet is associated with the Devil which reminded me of Disney's Frozen in which a prince seems to be handsome and perfect but is truly on a power run. Although Hamlet just wants revenge it is same idea.

  2. Howdy Ana,
This month we dedicated our class time to discussing and watching Hamlet-based films, but we also completed forum posts and read the "Balancing Hamlet" essay, too. It is excellent that you were able to see how many interpretations of Hamlet can be made. Exposing ourselves to various interpretations not only enriches our experience with Hamlet, but teaches us humility and important morals for the future. In life, we will learn time and again that it is best to hear all perspectives before making a final decision.

  3. I cannot believe how quickly the end of the year came. It was crazy! I really liked the movies and I thought that they had helped with understanding Hamlet more. I agree, the relationships between the characters were really different. Most of them did touch on the Oedipus complex though, which is interesting. We disagree on the Oedipus complex part because when I was reading I felt like Hamlet had a crush on his mom. Watching all these different interpretations was fun and I like watching a play, because it allows you to see things that maybe you could not see while reading the text. The discussions that we have been having have been tough. I think that everyone almost has a different idea of Hamlet and sometimes the majority overrules any other ideas, which should not be discounted. Like with what Audrey said about hearing all perspectives, I feel like that can apply to our discussions as well.

  4. Time really flies doesn't it? Soon all of our hard work would pay off. Something i liked about post is that you mentioned on how different the way the relationships between each character shown. Kind of brings to mind what Audrey had said how different perspectives usually would have a different viewpoint on taking things. Just like how all humans are different in a way that's unique. So seeing the different interpretations lets us learn and add to what our own interpretation of it.
